Effects of Flooding in the Lower Shire, Malawi

The southern districts of Malawi (The Lower Shire) particularly Chikwawa and Nsanje, have experienced heavy rains and violent winds causing flooded villages and demolished shelter, resulting to loss of life, serious injuries and a number of displaced and destitute communities. Homes, crops, and in some cases entire communities, have either been submerged under water or washed away completely by the devastating floods. Accessibility has also been a great cause of concern.

The need for assistance is high in order to aid those suffering from disabilities, the elderly and other vulnerable groups who have lost everything including shelter and other basic needs. Others have lost their crops and will be subject to hunger for months to come, being that subsistence crop farming is their only source of continuous food.

PASHELLO CHARITABLE TRUST INVOLVEMENT

Pashello Charitable Trust (PCT) has been knee-deep in the area helping with the rescue and recovery operation to bring flood victims to camps on higher ground for emergency shelter, food, and treatment. PASHELLO has teamed up with its partners to make a difference by organizing a weekly Feeding Program that’s conducted every Friday at Pashello Campus accessible to all vulnerable groups. Also in collaboration with a team from ‘Malawi Missions’, Pashello was able to provide free medical services to multiple vulnerable groups in the community.
