Here is an overview of the key insights of Malawi
- Food Security: Malawi usually experiences food insecurity due to factors such as erratic weather patterns, poor agricultural practices and limited access to modern farming techniques (Source: FAO, ” Malawi: Food Security Outlook, June 2021″). Due to a dependence on rain-fed agriculture, communities become vulnerable to a shortage of food in periods of drought and/or flooding.
- Education: In Malawi, a limited access to quality education especially in the rural areas, hinders children’s development and denies them a brighter future. Challenges include inadequate school infrastructure, teacher shortages and low enrollment rates (Source: UNESCO, “Education for All Global Monitoring Report”). Improving access to schools, ensuring the availability of qualified teachers and addressing the barriers to education such as Poverty and Gender inequality are essential in achieving higher education levels in Malawi.
- Poverty: Many residents of N’gabu and surrounding areas face poverty and economic hardship because of limited employment opportunities and low agricultural productivity. Addressing poverty requires targeted interventions to promote economic diversification, enhance agricultural practices and create income-generating opportunities.
- Water and Sanitation: Access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities is often limited in the rural areas of Malawi, such as Chikwawa N’gabu, this can lead to several health risks such as Waterbourne diseases (Source: UNICEF, “Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Malawi”). Improved water infrastructure and sanitation facilities are needed to address these challenges.
- Healthcare Services/Access: Rural communities in Malawi often lack adequate healthcare infrastructure, medical supplies and personnel, leading to challenges in accessing essential healthcare services (Source: Malawi Ministry of Health, “Health Sector Strategic Plan 2017-2022”). Addressing this challenge requires investment in/ improved healthcare infrastructure, training medical personnel and the provision on medical supplies.
- Infrastructure: Rural areas in Malawi like N’gabu face challenges with poor road networks, limited access to electricity and inadequate transportation infrastructure, resulting to low economic development and hindering access to essential services (Source: World Bank, “Malawi – Country Partnership Framework for FY19-FY23”). Investing in road infrastructure and transportation systems can increase the access to services such as markets, schools and healthcare facilities.
- Natural Disasters: Communities like those in N’gabu are vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods which can result in the loss of lives, displacement and the damage of homes and infrastructure. implementing disaster preparedness and mitigation measures such as early warning systems and resilient infrastructure can aid in reducing the impact of these natural disasters.
